Thunder-traveling-over-the-mountains

Fog has settled into Rye and yesterday morning I took a few shots on my school run..
Between the school and my house are a few small sections wood, not ancient, but I suspect one day they will be, baring a major revolution in this country, this land will not be built on. The fog obscured the far boundary of the wood so all you could see were the bareness of the trees and fog. I was transported back in time before our European forefathers cleared the land for farms and our future. Contrasting to this pristine woodland scene was one of our utility poles embellished with extra line and graffiti, sadly I can not say whether this was done by misguided youth or approved by a con-ed foreman. West coast readers will have to use your imagination regarding the blight of above ground power/communication lines that decorate our communities here. While processing the shots I thought about the land, its history and how resilient it is to our abuse or cataclysmic destruction.. it comes back like we were never even here.
I then read Chief Joseph's ( aka In-mut-too-yah-lat-lat / Thunder traveling over the mountains ) speech he made to congress.
I don't know if this is taught in schools, I don't remember being taught it in my school, but it should be. How much we could have shared and learned from this culture..how blinded we were by our own doctrine, arrogance and greed..and how eloquent is this man we thought a savage? Truly his words are like thunder traveling over the mountains.
